A long Contribution (english below)

It was really loooo long ago that there was a normal post here … so if you can speak of normal on the topic 😉

A lot of time went into the videos and I have to say that the success is really overwhelming. Thank you for watching! A little anticipation: the next video is currently being produced 😉

Today I would like to shed light on the things that you just didn’t see in the video and on the other hand the things that happened completely isolated from the videos. Let’s just start.

Do you remember the first video about the compressed air start? Even if it was really difficult to capture with the camera: Here is the picture of the open exhaust valve. The endoscope with swivel optics was a really good investment!

The effort with the brass ring around the compressed air starter was less good. Not only was it not necessary, no, it also destroyed itself again directly because it was clamped by the screwed cover cap. Maybe I’ll make a necklace out of it. You already know how this crazy rapper who put his watch on 😉

Admittedly they worked unnecessarily: The tools for grinding the sealing surface in the compressed air starter. I can also enjoy it when something just works out what you think up …

Here again something from the category „That was probably nothing“. The components sold as Hall sensors were VR sensors after all. Shit. Fortunately, they have almost the same installation dimensions … so almost …

So Alex quickly made good spacers. Together with the newly tinkered cables, we then also had a camshaft signal.

Speaking of the signal: who will recognize the washer under the VR sensor for the left bank? Yes, a VR sensor can also sit too close to the trigger wheel. Completely new insight for me. Especially since we had tried that with our lathe and the oscilloscope.

Also so +/- 10°. Da geht zumindest nicht direkt was kaputt 😉

Trigger wheels and crank angle back and forth … before you dare to start the first time, at least the ignition angle should be reasonably correct. So +/- 10 °. At least something doesn’t break right away 😉

But how are you supposed to flash that clean if you only have a few seconds until the compressed air bottle is empty?

Zack, the influencer clutter has already been misused. The camera makes videos at 50 frames / second. So record the start and then fast forward frame by frame directly on the camera until you have the flash on. Very relaxed. The exact setting can be made when the engine is running. Then it turns more evenly anyway …

Achja, für die linke Bank natürlich auch 😉

Oh yes, of course for the left bank too 😉

While we’re on the topic of influencer clutter. Here is the setup for the static video / sound recording. I think the proportion of action cam to sound recorder is already good 😉

The aim of the whole action is to be able to simply record the sound properly. I´m always going nuts when the hottest engines in the world are filmed with the shittiest microphone in the world. So I try my luck with a dynamic drum microphone for extremely low frequencies and high volumes.

Naaaa? Merkste was? 😉

Here is another lesson in terms of serial communication. The Ecumaster data logger receives its information via a serial data stream from the engine control. It just couldn’t be persuaded to join in … Everything was wired correctly … Power supply correct to plus and minus, RXD from the logger to RXD of the controller and TXD from the logger to TXD from the controller. Naaaa? Notice what? 😉

Something stupid …. It makes sense to connect the sending end (TXD) to the receiving end (RXD) …. Well, I won’t make the same mistake again 😉

Supp….

Yes, we are now back on the first run. The oil filter was already bent and therefore no longer tight …..

… there are also chips coming out of the engine that push the counter pressure up so far that oil really comes out of the last crack.

But …. the sieve does its job amazingly well. With the naked eye, no dirt can be seen under it.

The chips were then carefully washed out for analysis. There is nothing to be found that would make me more worried and where I don’t know where it comes from 😉

The filter was also straightened, sealed and then checked for leaks … it works …

Time to get the oil out of the tank.

Schon erstaunlich was da in so kurzer Zeit zusammen kommt.

Here is the rest of the oil pan that the return pumps of the dry sump system had not yet sent home. The clear bubbles are methanol. It’s amazing what comes together in such a short time.

Methanol in the oil is really not awesome. It massively reduces the lubricity and, above all, it boils at 65 ° C (at normal pressure). At 100 ° C it already has a vapor pressure of 2.5 bar and thus pushes part of the oil directly out of the lubrication gaps. Ok, the boiling methanol keeps the oil pretty cold for that. These are the nice white clouds that you can see when pulling under some engines. 😉

Themenwechsel

On the subject of oil, we still have to talk about the return lines from the turbo. Thomy Mathmann immediately told me that they are too small. They were too 😉

Last but not least, in order to be able to find chips in the filter during the next run, we have now upgraded Dash 8 to a line with an inner diameter of 20mm … 😉

Change of topic

Since the compressed air start is now apparently working very well, we naturally want to stick with it. Later it should be a 200 bar compressed air cylinder with a powerful pressure reducer that brings the engine to life.

These bottles naturally want to be filled and for this reason the small diving compressor was given a neat frame.

In addition, a safety valve (exploding gas bottles are really not for me now) and a pressure switch that switches off at 200 bar.

The old motor switch has to give way …

… to make room for someone who is a little „smarter“. At this point, a big thank you to Elektro Bongard for their support!

Bis hier hin war es harmlos….

Up to here it was harmless …

*grml*

… and then you notice that the old power cable does not have a neutral conductor that you need for the circuit … *grml*

Kein großes Problem, frisst aber Zeit…

Not a big problem, but it takes up time …

Testlauf bestanden.

Test run passed. It takes a long time until the bottle is full, but we have time 😉

This has to do with air, but not with the compressor. Note: „A motor control can only work as precisely as its sensors are“

Since I don’t necessarily want to rely only on calibration curves and sensors from Chineesia, a calibration chamber was needed. A big word for a drilled aluminum block with a bicycle pump, a pressure gauge and a few inch threads to screw in sensors 😉
With this I can check in any case whether the measured value in the engine control also is correct.

The steering and the instrument panel are supposed to go slowly. At the next start I wanted to take place in the driver’s seat.

First, however, a lid was made for the oil tank …

… and turned an adapter for the steering wheel using ingenious sketches *cough*.

In order to be able to crank properly (from full lock to full lock it is approx. 16 turns), of course you still need a knob.

This beautiful standard part is not only made of the wrong material, no, it is also somehow too heavy 😉

So one turned out of aluminum and frizzled with the steering wheel.

Ein Bestückungsplan für die Schalter musste her….

An assembly plan for the switches was needed …

… to build a corresponding box for the display.

You can tell from such small details that someone comes from practice. A simple, true-to-scale drawing to print out and you can punch the mounting holes properly.

Sonnenschutz….

Sun protection ….

When almost everything was finished, it had to be hold to the tractor. And what happenend?  Nothing, crap! The box has become way too wide … *grml*

Also über die Bandsäge damit…. Man verschwendet ja auch sonst keine Zeit.

So over the band saw with it … You don’t waste any other time.

Due to a lack of space, 3 switches have to move under the steering wheel on the left.

Their cover has become much too massive again … how can that be? 😉

A little milling and the part is already finished … light too 😉

The adapter from the steering wheel to the pump will probably end up in the melt sooner or later. On the one hand because the steering wheel needs more distance from the display, on the other hand because a steering wheel quick coupling can make sense here 😉

For the first attempts, the old steering wheel bracket was simply recycled.

I think this will be something 😉

But what do I see in the penultimate photo?

Alex made a welding gauge for the turbo gitter. It has to be tidy too …

Da unser Praktikant Janik auch mal was sinnvolles machen sollte…

Since our trainee Janik should also do something useful …

… he took apart the Magirus-Deutz axles.

The first diff was in very good condition, the second … well …. Serge Jacoby just said that everything was not so bad … I’m curious …

Even if I don’t know what for: You can always use planetary gears. But they just didn’t want to get out of the axles …. everything gagged and scruffy.

„A coarse wedge belongs on a coarse block of wood“

After a while, the desired innards were also exposed.

Without knowing whether we will ever need it, the differential housing should also be saved from scrap.

„Lass mich mal auf den Stapler…….“

„Let me get on the forklift …….“

One side actually broke off …..

… whereupon the other one slammed into the hardening furnace in a high arc … something stupid … you could have guessed it …..

So then only one axle has to be dismantled ….. right?

If you have the opportunity to get the axles of a reconnaissance tank Luchs in which the coveted and legendary aluminum Mercedes / MAN outer planets sit, then I can’t just pass them 😉 😉
Our trainee will be there for a while …..

Now to let the contribution end slowly:

Knapp 1.000kg aller feinste  Kolbenlegierung…. Für Spezialprojekte…versteht sich.

In diesem Sinne: Bleibt gesund und bleibt dran!

Almost 1,000kg of the finest piston alloy …. For special projects … of course.

With this in mind: Stay healthy and stay tuned!
