Revision of a reverser (english below)

Hello friends of pulling sport! Corona is slowly but surely withdrawing … However, events are still a little in coming. Time enough to tinker with the tractor.

As is so often the case, the biggest construction sites start quite harmlessly:

When I bought the Smoking Devil, the lobbes told me that the reverse gear was broken and only a new gear had to be used. It will be done quickly, I thought … so I really thought 😉

The transmission is basically just a shift sleeve and a reverse gear. If the shift sleeve is pushed down to the right, the drive shaft is connected to the differential. On the new sleeve to be installed there is a gear wheel that changes the direction of rotation via an intermediate shaft when it is pushed to the top left. That was it.

Raus muss er, der Reverser.

It, the reverser, has to get out.

Then the first shock. The brackets were only „semi-optimal“ welded and broken some time ago.

Naja, erstmal raus mit dem Dingen.

Well, first get the thing out.

The connection to the differential also has great weight-saving potential. The flanges are very massive 😉

The traces in the case are evidence of some heavy fighting 😉

First disassemble everything to be able to take stock.

Wichtig!

The two switches give the signal for neutral and reverse gear. The starter valve must only be able to be operated when there is no gear in. Important!

After cleaning it all looks much better. And that’s when the idea of building a new case arose.

The old one was basically built from 10mm aluminum plates that were connected to a box with many screws and a lot more sealing compound (yuckling). You can make it nicer 😉

Not only should a new housing be created, no, we would also like to record it in a video. Therefore there are only a few stillstanding pictures now 😉

Taddaaaaa! Ein zweiteiliges Gehäuse aus allerfeinstem 7075 T651.  Ich denke das kann sich sehen lassen 😉

Taddaaaaa! A two-part case made from the finest 7075 T651. I think that can be seen 😉

Probehalber mal zusammenstecken. Scheint auf den ersten Blick zu passen.

Put them together for a try. Seems to fit at first glance.

The most unusual securing of the ball bearing … should ever be done like this …

Here again the two flanges for the connection to the differential. If it goes well, 7000Nm have to be applied later.

Probemontage.

Trial assembly. Just a few giblets are missing.

To see how the drive shaft can be made …

… the clutch has to be reinstalled. The photo with the date is required for the technical security check.

In order to be able to set the clutch play correctly, the height of the disk package must be measured.

Ein wenig rechnen….

Do a little math …

…und schon kann man die Abstandshalter einstellen. So einfach ist das…

… and you can adjust the spacing studs. So simple it is…

Scheiben drauf….

Discs on it…

… and the spacer studs and the clutch automatic can be installed.

The connection between the clutch and the reverser is made by a drive shaft, more precisely a drive tube of 80x5mm. The correspondingly toothed sleeves are welded into its ends. A bit rudimentary but quite functional 😉

Problem: In order to be able to remove the drive shaft or the reveser, you have to move the entire engine forward. I don’t like that at all …

Also muss direkt die eine Seite dran glauben. 😉

So one side has to be cut instantly. 😉

The lathe quickly took care of the remains of the pipe. I would like to use the sleeve as such again. Let’s see if it all works out.

However, a very fundamental problem arises: Again and again you are confronted with a wide variety of splines. There are tens of thousands of variants … in the metric area alone. Not to mention the inch nonsense … To make it short: If you cannot produce these splines – inside and outside – you are always dependent on others or the components have to be somehow screwed together. That’s not mine at all. After pondering and testing for a long time, I’m already very close to the solution …..

Tadaaa! Ein 8mm Diamantschleifstift in Kugelform! Klar soweit? 😉

Tadaaa! An 8mm diamont point grinder in the shape of a ball! Sure so far? 😉

In addition, a turning tool and worn indexable inserts. As you can easily see: the test object should be an external toothing according to DIN 5482 with the dimensions 48×44. Because that’s the one that comes out of the clutch.

Kurzerhand wird unsere Fräsmaschine….

Without further ado, our milling machine becomes…

…zur Schleifmaschine. 😉

… a grinding machine. 😉

Once you have found out how the toothing has to be constructed …..

… you have the basis for grinding appropriate indexable inserts.

They then fit exactly into the toothing. How it goes on? At some point I will think about the subject with moving images.

Little by little, the innards for the reverser are created. Here the shift fork.

Meanwhile, Alex takes care that no compressor parts can crumble out of the turbo protection.

Turbo 1 fertig….

Turbo 1 done…

Turbo 2 follows. The whole number is always to be seen against the background that there will be new, significantly larger turbos „soon“. It has to work, be safe but certainly not beautiful 😉

Gaszuganbindung….Ausnahmsweise mal ganz ohne CAD…ehrlich! 😉

Throttle cable connection …. For once, completely without CAD … honestly! 😉

The wastegate has also got an exhaust pipe … there are still so little annoying construction sites open everywhere. But they are also getting less 😉

Also Kurbelgehäuse, Zylinderbänke und Köpfe.

The Transmash family has grown! Anyone who speaks the Polish language will immediately notice: The engine comes from Poland 😉
Strictly speaking, it is a civilian variant of the tank engine. In contrast to many other industrial Transmashes, this motor made by Wola is completely made of aluminum. So crankcases, cylinder banks and heads. Big advantage: The engine is intended for use with a flywheel and is therefore much(!) shorter. In Germany, Karl Helmbrecht drives this type of engine very successfully in the Final Destination.

So our trainee Janik went straight to the dismantling of all kinds of superfluous junk. Since even the exhaust manifolds are made of cast aluminum, it is quite possible that steps and snow guards with transmash content will soon be found on German roofs *rofl*

The flywheel stubbornly refuses to leave its position.

Since the jacking screws have some crude fine thread size for which I will definitely not find a screw —> tap M16 in. Operation quick fix 😉

Damit kann man sicher was anfangen.

This quickly resulted in success. Nice to see here: the crankshaft flange. But also the bell around the flywheel is practically screwed in a sufficiently stable manner. You can certainly do something with that.

We slowly come to the end of this article. I would like to close with a device that Sascha Mecking recommended:

Ein 250 Euro Ultraschallgerät mit 30 Liter Volumen. Etwas skeptisch ob des geringen Preises….

A 250 euro ultrasonic cleaner with a volume of 30 liters. A little skeptical about the low price ….

… that was tested directly on rather filthy gearbox parts.

Was soll ich sagen?

What can I say? Simply awesome. Even if you don’t see it so well in the pictures, the cleaning success is remarkable. Meanwhile I throw the parts in there dripping with oil and after an hour they are metallic bright. Really cool. The whole thing with a simple machine cleaning fluid and a little washing soda (sodium carbonate). Aluminum is attacked by the stuff, but really good for greasy steel parts.

In the sense: Stay healthy and stay tuned!
