Einen rein trichtern….

Funnel one in… (english below)

Before we start with the eponymous part of the article, here is the direct link to the last article. The part on the milling machine is finished from this side….

… and after a few processing steps also from the other side 😉

Also direkt den nächsten Klotz 7075 drauf packen.

So put the next block 7075 on top.

It’s a shame how much of this wonderful stuff is turned into shavings. Unfortunately you can’t cast all of these alloys… otherwise I would do it 😉

Our machine doesn’t burn, we just don’t have any coolant on it and so Stefan had to cool it with cutting oil… two noses for each and the haze is gone 😉

The part pushes our lathe to the limits of its dimensions.

Nevertheless, this part has also been finished machining for the time being.

Anderes Teil.

Other part. Little by little, things come back from the heat treatment. This part still has plenty of allowance and now has a tensile strength of 1250 N/mm².

And you also notice this strength during machining 😉 Well, it’s better to do it right once than over and over again.

For a change I just had to make small pieces of buttery soft aluminum again….

Meanwhile, Simon is taking care of some Magirus Deutz Axles that are still lying around the yard. The differential used to be particularly important to us…

…so it is now particularly the outer planets that we want to use to make the transmission into fast behind the clutch bell.

Natürlich verwahren wir auch die Differentiale 😉

Of course we also keep the differentials 😉

After several hours of heated ultrasound bathing in Stefan’s secret cleaning elixir, the parts look like new. Ready for further processing.

Speaking of further processing: Somehow it grabbed me and I came up with the great idea of modifying the two crankshafts lying around.

Of course, the new crankshafts should also have the balancing weights.

Also rauf auf die Maschine. Mit einer streng arbeitssicherheitskonformen Hebevorrichtung *rofl*

So get on the machine. With a lifting device that strictly complies with occupational safety regulations *rofl*

And that’s where the problems begin 😉 The design is exactly the same as we currently drive, so nothing new. It’s just that the Russians/Soviets/Poles (I don’t know who put this together) put in a lot of effort into the steel. Pre-drilling with HSS went smoothly…

….the 14mm drill gave up very quickly and again and again.

“Isn’t there anything tungsten carbide available?” It’s good that Stefan’s new hobby is industrial auctions. So a few days ago this drill arrived and was immediately used profitably…if you can speak of profitable in this context 😉 😉

Next problem please. If you start machining in the middle of the crankshaft, the tool lengths fit… on the outer crank webs they don´t fit because they are high.

Men, don’t let anyone tell you, it depends on the length!

At some point everything fits and the crank web is machined one after the other. A total of 6 pieces per crankshaft.

Nr.1 fertig.

No.1 finished.

Of course there are also problems with number 2, it would be too boring 😉

In number two, the „discs“ of the crankshaft on which the weight is to be placed are just a smooth millimeter larger.

Ok, auch das bekommen wir hin. Wird die Bearbeitung halt ein wenig aufwändiger.

Ok, we can do that too. The processing just becomes a little more complicated.

That too will be done at some point. Two ready-made crankshafts make you quickly forget all the effort 😉

Now finally to the eponymous part of the article.

You probably remember the mold from one of the last posts.

Wir gießen uns….

We´re casting…

…Einlasstrichter.

…intake funnel.

Ok, there were a few more 😉 😉

Even if you know they are 3D printed from plastic…metal is just cooler 😉

The block that holds the injection valve should sit on it later. But before that happens…

…we still have to put together a drilling jig.

Das passt schon mal alles zusammen 😉

It all fits together 😉

One can only hope that everything actually works…

In diesem Sinne: Bleibt dran!

To slowly get out of the article, here’s a picture that at first glance seems pretty unspectacular. What is that? Who will be curious? 😉
I just think that we’ll see the machine every now and then in future posts 😉
On that note: Stay tuned!

Tankstelle

Filling station (english below)

That’s exactly what happens when Alex has a lot of time (due to illness):

A booze filling station 😉 😉 Totally awesome piece! You put your glass on it and the lout fills it up!

And visually it turned out totally awesome too! I think we’ll have a lot of fun with this part!

But whenever something is really cool, Stefan has to fiddle with it…

We seem to have a problem with the voltage regulator somewhere.

Das Spannungssignal sollte eigentlich kein Signal sein. Aber das sollten wir schon hin bekommen. Fun Fact: Die Maschine arbeitet aber trotzdem einwandfrei 😉

The voltage signal shouldn’t actually be a signal. But we should manage that. Fun fact: The machine still works perfectly 😉

Aber auch Stahl haben wir zu bieten.

But we also have steel to offer.

This will be the clutch shaft on which the discs run. With some additional material on it, it will first go to heat treatment….

…genau wie die Ausgangswelle.

…just like the output shaft.

Now comes the story again: A lot of fuss for a totally simple part. 😉

So entsteht aus einem großen Stück Verütungstahl….

This is how a large piece of tempered steel is turned into…

….nicht mehr und nicht weniger….

….no more and no less….

…einer Unterlegscheibe. 😉

…a washer. 😉

Meanwhile there is another gray cast iron block on the milling machine….

…and there’s also a bit of tool steel included. What is the whole thing supposed to be good for? More on that in future posts 😉

Derweil schraubt Simon den kleinen Trecker schon wieder zusammen…

Meanwhile, Simon is screwing the little tractor back together again…

It’s not even the end of November and are we already ready for the new season with the little tractor? Pinch me…that scares me 😉

Nooooooo…we don’t expect any new floods. Rather, the top edge of the frame is precisely leveled so that some measurements and adjustments can be made.

Among other things, because something is still missing here. But not just here… it should still remain a bit mysterious 😉

To end the post, here’s another big block 7075….

….which is slowly but surely turning into a smaller block.

With that in mind, I would say: We still have some work to do, stay tuned!

Erste Anprobe…..

First fitting…. (english below)

For the first time, a real engine has taken place on the former Le Coiffeur. *duckandaway* 😉 I think it’s doing really well. But before that happened, some work still had to be done.

Let’s start with a plate made of the finest 7075 T651…

….which was directly provided with a „few“ holes of different sizes.

Sogleich folgte ein etwas massiverer Aluklotz.

A somewhat more massive aluminum block immediately followed.

Since such a block is extremely difficult to clamp with our resources, we simply had to be a little more creative. The weld follows the motto: God grant that it sticks 😉 (rhyme only works in German, sorry)

Before the shouting gets louder again: The heat-affected zone will later be completely machined away and will therefore no longer be in the finished part.

Well, sometimes it gets a little tight 😉 😉

Seite 1 fertig.

Side 1 is done.

There’s our plate from the beginning again…

…which is then used to clamp for machining side 2.

Damit ist das Teil direkt rückenschonender geworden. Notiz an mich: Die Fräse müsste mal wieder leer geschüppt werden 😉

This makes the part easier on the back. Note to myself: The milling machine needs to be emptied again 😉

Scheint so als würde alles passen.

Seems like everything fits.

Fitting screw with 13mm shaft. Of course in strength 10.9 as the rulebook wants. 13mm shaft is great, it can be easily turned down to the 12.7mm (half inch) of the bellhousing 😉

Passt…..ist ja auch ne Passschraube 😉 😉

Fits…it’s also a fitting screw 😉 😉

Auch die anderen Gewinde passen. Cool.

The other threads also fit. Cool. Good preparatory work is usually worth it. Here too, to all smart-asses: Yes, hexagon screws have to be used later.

This changes the square plate on the milling machine…

…in eine runde Platte. 😉

…into a round plate. 😉

Erst Passprobe am Motor.

First fit test on the engine.

When a tool mechanic meets a Russian engine… Everything is just too accurate. 😉

Mit etwas Nacharbeit passt es dann.

With a little rework it will fit.

Zeit den Motor zusammen zu stecken. Wenn auch noch ohne Innereien.

Time to put the engine together. Even if it still has no innards.

Just because it´s so beautiful: With funnel 😉

This means the engine can then take place…

Even if the lifting equipment doesn’t fully comply with factory regulations 😉

After some metal was cut away from the chassis, the engine could be pushed as far forward as I would like.

The lack of a crankshaft meant that it was possible to align directly with the drive train. 😉

Einfach geil!

Just crazy cool!

The fat fans make it even cooler! It’s time to design the exhaust manifold… it’ll probably be super tight again….

With this motivation you can immediately get two steel discs ahead.

My insider tip for a tempered steel if you want to nitride it later. Actually a very common hot work steel, thanks to its tempering resistance it can be hardened to over 50HRC without losing its hardness during subsequent nitriding. The usual tempered steels immediately become soft again (approx. 30 HRC)

Ja, der Fräser war stumpf. Zum raus schruppen reicht es aber noch 😉

Yes, the cutter was dull. But it’s still enough to rough it out 😉

Erstmal fertig…

Finished first… Now the parts go to tempering before they are finished. I think around 1400 N/mm² (approx. 40HRC) is a good compromise between hardness and toughness. Oh yes, these are planetary carriers for speeding up the driveshaft speed 😉

A positive side effect of the steel: The chips simply have a brutally cool color!

In the meantime, Simon is building himself a roof if he wants to camp on the loading area again 😉 😉

Geil! In diesem Sinne: Bleibt dran!

We’ll leave the post with these last two cool pictures. Cool because the clutch inspection is already done. Thorsten brought us something else cool, pretty 12-cylindric, and then did the inspection of the clutches. Thank you! This means that the two tractors can be put back together again and we can concentrate fully on the new one! Cool! With this in mind: Stay tuned!

Gussformen und anderer Wahnsinn

Molds and other madness (english below)

Simon can’t be stopped at the moment, so the green Bulgarian’s crankshaft has to believe in it too. We think it makes sense if we prepare a replacement crankshaft immediately.

Die Schwingungsdämpfer müssen ab. Die brauchen wir nicht 😉

The vibration dampers must be removed. We don’t need them 😉

Also schnell den Einhandwinkelschleifer (ist sogar ne Flex 😉 😉 ) ansetzen…..

So quickly put on the one-handed angle grinder (it’s even a Flex 😉 😉 )…

….and your fingers are bleeding 😉 But then the weights lost and are now in the scrap container.

The engine block is already together enough that it will soon be able to sit on the chassis for the first time. First just to see how everything fits.

Was Simon so alles findet…*rofl*

What Simon finds…*rofl*

Motivated by the key ring, the head was dismantled in no time. Only one asshole valve refused to play the game.

The opportunity for Stefan to rebuild the valve screwing tool from good tempered steel 😉

Fertig soweit.

Done so far. Seems like I have to speed up with the Flowbench 😉

Themenwechsel. Was macht man wenn man übermütig wird? Richtig Edelstahl zerspanen. In diesem Fall austenitischen 1.4301….cool.

Change of topic. What do you do when you get cocky? Correctly cut stainless steel. In this case austenitic 1.4301…cool.

Well, it works slowly and with a lot of cooling…

I quickly made a device to be able to cut the groove…

…and then the mounts for the injection valves are already ready.

Since I somehow don’t feel comfortable screwing a 1.2m long stainless steel tube rigidly onto a 1.2m long aluminum cylinder head, compensators are needed. These stainless steel parts are somewhere from the solar thermal sector. I don’t know… they look good.

With a little courage on the lathe (they can’t be clamped very well 😉 ) the threaded pieces were then…

…Teile zum Einschweißen.

…parts to be welded in.

Wechseln wir den Werkstoff. Aluminium ist angesagt!

Let’s change the material. Aluminum is the topic!

You can easily make the nuts for the spark plug tubes from the leftover pieces.

Damit haben wir die Baustelle auch abgearbeitet. Die Teile sind einbaufertig!

We have also completed the construction site. The parts are ready to install!

Selber Werkstoff, anderes Teil.

Same material, different part.

The HANA valves are pretty cool right out of the box, but you just have to rework them a bit.

This way you can easily turn off the flange at the front, but at the same time it is the block in which the part will be welded later. just to absorb the heat.

Again the same material, again a different part. Here you can see a commercially available DASH screw connection. Since I had it in my head that the methanol should only come into contact with stainless steel or Teflon in the new tractor… aluminum doesn’t fit in well with the concept here. The idea is simply to remake the inner part out of stainless steel. To do this, the blue union nut must be removed. Actually, this should be easy to do by pushing the wire snap ring through the hole and thus widening it…

…eigentlich.

…actually. The whole thing ended in an orgy of a terrible amount of power, at the end of which everything was destroyed 😉 😉

Eine andere Lösung musste her.

Another solution had to be found. Since the inner part needs to be replaced anyway, you can also machine it directly…

That’s better, at least everything else stays okay. Now go to the computer and bring the inner part into CAD.

Anderes Material und anderes Teil. Grauguss liegt auf der Fräse.

Different material and different part. Gray cast iron lies on the milling machine.

Nach einigen sinnreichen Bearbeitungsschritten….

After a few sensible cutting steps…

…the first half of the mold for the front cover is finished. Note: Only real with woodpecker 😉

The mold for the intake funnel is created in parallel on the other machine.

Ist die Form nicht schön geworden? 😉

Isn’t the mold beautiful? 😉

Saubere Arbeit!

Another material again: Paint 😉 Simon and Kim made the mini saddle beautiful. Good work!

Cool!

The two also thought of new fastenings for the drive-on wedges and the tarpaulins. Cool!

To leave the post slowly: Simon has once again expanded his helmet collection and redesigned it directly in team colors!
With that in mind, I would say: Stay tuned!

Der Bremswagen erklärt

The Sledge explained (english below)

Floating Finish, the German tractor pulling web show starts the winter season with an awesome workshop video (sorry, only in german language)! Take a look if you’ve always wanted to know how a pulling sledge works!

CAD und in echt

CAD and in real (english below)

A lot of not-so-exciting things are happening at the moment…at least to outsiders. I would like to give you a little insight into what was created after hundreds of hours of CAD work… at least a small part.

So wird die neue Ansaugbrücke aussehen.

This is what the new intake manifold will look like.

Away from the pipes, silicone hoses and other annoying stuff, towards a large volume from which the beautifully shaped funnels can suck the air into the cylinders.

The adapter for the clutch bell is also fully programmed.

A little technical delicacy is the gearbox into fast. After the clutch, we want to go 3.1 times faster with a planetary gear. The basis for this is the outer planet from the Magirus-Deutz axes. This should actually be unbreakable 😉

But less spectacular things also have to be done. In this case the front cover for the engine. This is also where the oil is transferred to the crankshaft and to all other lubrication points.

In this way we can make the leap into reality. Before I build a mold for the part, I would like to use 3D printing to check whether everything fits as I had imagined.

Also schnell die Ölwanne montiert…

So quickly attached the oil sump….

…and it fits. Since I can practically smell the question of why there are such fat screws in there: There used to be an incredibly heavy gray cast iron bell with a huge fan on it. In the future it will only be around 2 kilos of aluminum 😉

We once again had active support from Kim...

….who has unscrewed all sorts of unnecessary stuff from the Le-Coiffeur chassis.

Simon poliert derweil weiter an der Ölwanne rum 😉

Old acquaintances are brought forward again. These are the cylinder heads from the „then not aluminum“ Transmash from Bulgaria. The idea is very simple: If we break them during all our experiments (port machining, valve machining, springs, timing, etc.), we still have the original heads 😉 😉

Erstmal sauber machen….

Clean them first…

Simon’s way of saying that he’s finishing work now 😉 😉

Some of the endless parts that need to be made…

In diesem Sinne: Bleibt dran!

Every single one of these metal pieces is still waiting to be machined… My day would really take 50 or more hours. 😉
On that note: Stay tuned!

Wie ein Irrer….

Like a madman…(english below)

Instead of resting a little, the exact opposite actually happens. Let’s get started as if the next event was in a week 😉

Simon screws like a madman. Like every year, the clutches have to be removed for technical inspection.

Nevertheless, there was still enough time to put things in order again and build a small (possibly too small) shelf for trophies 😉 😉

Simon’s enthusiasm for cleaning up was immediately contagious. So I took the box with the old axle that came to us. Well, who among the old hands in pulling recognizes it?

It’s a very old axle from the Hot Head Minipuller. You have to imagine that, people used to drive them with Magirus Deutz axles 😉 😉

The reverser is also out. I think I should make the gears for the reverse gear out of better material. That’s suspiciously loud 😉

The sleeve finally is done. 😉

This has now also been newly manufactured and is just waiting for heat treatment.

As soon as the big tractor was dismantled…Simon has already taken on the small one 😉 Here, too, the clutch has been removed for inspection. I’m not entirely sure yet whether we should install a faster differential. This would change the gear ratio from 3,7 to 3,4. I have to think about myself again 😉

Ganz anderes Thema.

Completely different topic. The near catastrophe with the torn off manifold in Schlechtenwegen prompted me to look for a solution for welding “in the field”. The fact that we had a company with a welding machine less than a hundred meters away in Schlechtenwegen was a very lucky coincidence that is probably not always the case at other events. Since the machines from Parkside (Lidl) have a very good reputation, I bought us a MIG/MAG device straight away.

Wohlgemerkt alles ohne Schutzgas.

And what should I say? The Honda power generator just about manages the above setting. Surprisingly good welds can be made with 0.8mm flux cored wire. Mind you, everything without protective gas.

With several layers, even thicker components can be welded stably. Again, we are talking about a welding machine that costs around 500 euros and works with an generator that is actually far too small.

Inspired by the results, we then moved on to the next level of difficulty: welding aluminum. The picture above reveals that something is wrong 😉 😉

Kaum polt man Brenner und Werkstück richtig….

You can hardly pole the burner and workpiece correctly….

…kann man ein wenig Alu kleckern. Schweißen ist das noch nicht 😉

…you can spill a little aluminum. That’s not welding yet 😉

Apart from the splashes, I would say that this is a pretty cool seam for 6mm material. Unfortunately, the power generator has no interest in this number at all 😉 It always reacts by shedding load. An acoustic spectacle 😉

This is the setting that also works on the generator. In the picture the seam looks worse than it actually is. With a little more preparation you can at least get temporary but durable aluminum parts welded. To be fair, you have to say that at most events you have a sufficiently good power supply and you can then weld with more power.

Next test: MAG welding with stainless steel wire. Strangely enough, it didn’t work at all on the power generator. But with a mains connection you can get good welds. All in all I am very satisfied.

Change of subject: It’s time to get the first parts for the new engine. In total, hundreds of different parts have to be manufactured. Let’s start harmlessly with the spark plug tubes.

Since I can practically hear the question why the right part is red: This is the first part where everything didn’t fit when setting up the machine. This can no longer be used later, but it is sufficient for setting up the next processing steps 😉

To slowly come to the end of the article: Two boxes arrived from Denmark.

Darin fanden wir die neuste Handtuchkollektion 😉

In there we found the latest towel collection 😉

To prevent the towels from blowing away, they were probably weighed down with pieces of steel… Looks strange.

Crazy, in Denmark you order a few towels and, almost by chance, you get the camshafts from Slaedehunden. 😉

So now we’ve reached the end. The oil pan from our new engine. We’ll probably move away from dry sump lubrication and add a wet sump to the oil pan. In that sense: stay tuned!

Das wärs gewesen…..

That would have been it…(english below)

The last event of the season is also over with Schlechtenwegen. It’s going into the winter break. Well, you can’t really call it a break considering what we’re planning. But more on that later. Before we talk about what happened in Schlechtenwegen, here are a few moving pictures.

At this point a big thank you to Stephan Görtz from Pullingpics for the video! Click on the picture to get started.

But before we could even get started, the mini saddle caused problems again after driving a few kilometers. The return line of the injectors was leaking. To make matters worse, it started raining during the repair…just awesome.

After a nerve-wracking route through the Kassel mountains (negative speed record: 38km/h… on the highway 😉 ), we arrived safely and were able to end the day with a few refreshing drinks.

On Saturday we hooked up with the little tractor. Piloted not by a half-naked Simon, but like in Sonsbeck by Andreas Rötter. To cut a long story short: The tractor didn’t want to work. Despite a total of 4 attempts, the engine could not be persuaded to cooperate. When turned it up it just kept shutting off. I’m just guessing it’s a totally stupid fault to find in the electrical system…..*grml* Well, that’s just pulling 😉

We then did a nice show run with the big tractor on Saturday afternoon. Unfortunately, the hope in the new tires was dashed: the tractor still vibrates like crazy.

Then on Sunday morning during the routine check the shock came. The manifold to the turbo simply vibrated off. So not just a crack, but off! What happened next probably only works in pulling. The Schlechtenwegen team pulled out all the stops and towed us into the village with the service tractor where we were able to weld the manifold. Crazy. A huge thank you to the whole team and to the Boss Vacuum company who made this possible!

I didn’t necessarily weld it nicely… but it was just supposed to hold 😉 😉 We were then pulled straight into the preparation room. The Limited Modifieds were the second class of the day….and the first was already running 😉

What Simon didn’t know until the evening before: He was supposed to drive the big tractor 😉

We couldn’t have imagined what happened next. The German championship in the 3.5t Limited Modified class is not based on points, but you have to qualify for the final.
A bit complicated, but just this: We weren’t qualified.

We wouldn’t have had a chance against the 800kg heavier competitors anyway… or so we thought. The first attempt in the preliminary run with a measly 65m should confirm our opinion.
But releasing just 0.05 bar of air pressure from the tires changed everything! For the first 20m we had no grip at all but then the tractor jumped once, the nose went up and the tires started to work… and how. A whopping full pull!

By the way, he was the only one in the class and therefore a sure win of the day. If someone had told us that beforehand, we would have called them crazy.

So we not only had a really good end to the season, but we almost even became German champions 😉 😉 Next year we’d better qualify for the finals 😉

That brings us to a first look at what’s coming up now. Basically both tractors remained intact.
For the little one, I’m thinking about a conversion to the EMU Black engine control including a completely new wiring harness.
With the big one, some small construction sites will have to be taken care of. Raise the towing eye at the front, new toothed sleeves, properly weld the manifold, etc.
The biggest construction site will probably be the valve train. After consulting with Henrik Larsen from the Truckpower team, my next suspicion for the vibrations lies in the valve springs, which are far too weak.
The engine may also get the new pistons in the same breath. Just to test them.
And above all there is the construction of an “all-in-transmash” for the former Le Coiffeur chassis. You definitely won’t get bored.
In that sense: stay tuned!

Maximale Reifenscheiße

Maximum tire shit (english below)

After a rollercoaster of emotions (more on that later), we are probably ready for the last event of the season. Or not??

But let’s start with something very pleasant. Four-stroke engines are like people…the potential is in the head…or not 😉
Basically, the cylinder head’s only job is to control the gas exchange and then keep the whole nightmare in the cylinder.
It all comes down to the question: How much air or oxygen can I get into the cylinder in a given time.
In addition to the ports and the valves, the control times of the valves are particularly important. So when do the valves open and how long are they open and at what stroke?

I don’t want to get too far ahead of the next videos, but the performance of an engine depends on the camshaft. For the insiders among you. Standard camtiming of a naturally aspirated transmash is 248° and 13mm valve lift.

That brings us to the Danish company Westpeed. After I had looked at some of the usual and unusual suspects in Germany and only heard what didn’t work, I had already given up hope of finding a service provider for re-grinding the Transmash camshafts. Henrik Larsen from the Truckpower Team from Denmark then gave me the crucial tip.

As a first step, I gave the good man a worn camshaft and he got straight to work, testing different sample camlobes to simply find out what kind of profile you could grind onto the cam. Things that other companies say shouldn’t work…
And lo and behold, the craziest thing the camshaft can do without welding on is 312° and 16mm stroke. That’s crazy. Now the ball is in my court to find out which valve lifts with which springs still make sense at which speed (if you can even talk about „making sense“ in this context 😉 😉 😉 ) With the results of my tests a suitable cam profile will definitely be found to give the old tranny a real boost. Many, many thanks again to Bo from Westspeed for the productive and result-oriented work!

Before things get really shitty, here are a few pictures of the installed diff…

…a gasket for the planetary gear that Simon made himself out of cardboard….

…und einer Bürostuhl-basierten Getriebeölpumpstation.

…and an office chair-based transmission oil pumping station.

Die Pappedichtung hält echt gut!

The cardboard seal holds up really well!

Was ne Kacke…da hat sich wohl was ordentlich verzogen.

In order to slowly turn the mood into a negative one, here is the reverser. In the previous post I discovered that it wasn’t broken at all, just tense. Sure, if you have to put 4mm under it in order to be able to shift without using force. What a pity… something must have gone awry.

Do you know that? You do something and secretly you have the feeling that what you are doing is not right? That’s how I felt the whole time with the old Puller 2000. They looked really bad from the start and also all the work on the rims… was it worth it?

Da bekommt man mal gar nichts richtig fest.

Of course, the holes in the rims are exactly where the tire’s steel belt lies. You can’t really get anything fixed there.

Also müssen mehr axiale Schrauben rein. Die werden zumindest ordentlich fest.

So more axial screws have to be put in. At least they will find real good grip in the tire.

Was dann kam….tja….einfach Kacke.

Geil!

Simon worked his ass off to get the screw connection as good as possible. What happened next…well…just crap.
The tire seemed so flat to me.

To put it briefly: The valve tore off the brand new tube.

Despite the greatest caution, the tire was relieved and rolled several times so that the tube could fit into the tire without any tension. These are really those moments when you just want to set the whole pile of shit on fire!!!! We then checked the valve on the other tire and This was also under massive tension. All this 4 days before the next event. Cool!

And now comes what makes pulling so great. Barely half an hour after our tire disaster, the solution was found. More precisely, new wheels were found. Yes…wheels…with rims.

So we went onto the highway in a night and haze operation…

Also flugs 2 Ringe mit Mercedes Lochbild gefertigt.

Of course, the new tires didn’t fit straight away. The existing adapters had to be reworked. So I quickly made 2 rings with Mercedes hole pattern. Of course those in the know already know where we were shopping based on the color 😉 😉

Flex, weld and roughly plan the contact area.

Die Feinheiten hat dann die Flächenschleifmaschine übernommen.

The surface grinding machine then took care of the finer details.

Fit test, sandblasting and then through the powder coating. Time is running out.

Well…who has been running Goodyear tires on Midwest rims for years?

Simon ist am Schrauben….

Simon is screwing…

…und Abdichten wie ein Irrer. 😉 😉

…and sealing like a madman. 😉 😉

There was even time left to make panels. Let’s see if I can get them shiny tomorrow 😉

Geil! Wie sagt Simon: Charakter formende Tage…. 😉 😉

Together with Simon’s painting work, the tractor is really looking good! Cool! As Simon says: Character building days…. 😉 😉

To slowly get out of the article: In Sonsbeck we noticed that the silicone hose connection from the turbocharger to the charge air line was constantly slipping.

That’s why there’s now an ultra-ugly weld seam that will hold the hose in place. I have to say…. thematically and in terms of dramaturgy, a total emergency stop 😉 😉

Of course I don’t want to let you die stupidly and at this point I would like to express my special thanks to Thommy Mathmann from the Dschinni Evolution Super Stock Team. From now on we will be driving on his old Goodyear tires. In terms of weight, we no longer fit into the Light Modified, but let’s drive there outside of the classification…we won’t win a flower pot anyway 😉
In that sense, I would say: See you there in Schlechtenwegen and stay tuned!

Felgen und Differential

Rims and differential (english below)

Before we start the actual post. Here’s the next and also the last event of the 2023 season. Both tractors are scheduled to go to Schlechtenwegen. Located fairly centrally in Germany, the finals of the German Championships take place here in many classes. The program promises a very cool weekend. You can get further information by clicking on the picture.

Some work still needs to be done so that we can take part with the large tractor. The reverser is now back together and switches smoothly 😉

Since the differential has to come out to change the gear ratio, the gear oil comes out first.

Simon is our man for beauty and is currently working like crazy to make the tractor not only technically better, but also more pleasing to the eye. 😉 The orange has disappeared pretty much everywhere and given way to the typical Schluckspecht colors 😉

The quick driveshafts from the differential to the outer planets look perfect…

Wieder was gelernt.

…which unfortunately cannot be said about this sleeve. This is a sleeve that connects the reverser to the differential. Learned something again. With a spline, at least one side has to be hard if you want to really send torque over it. Especially if it vibrates like hell 😉
The part has to be remade just like the other side. However, we’ll probably have to do it after Schlechtenwegen…

Beide Reifen sind inzwischen runter.

Meanwhile both tires came of.

You can tell that the rims have been around for a few years, if not a few decades, because there are probably 4 thick layers of paint on them. Even the tough paint stripper has to struggle 😉

The high-pressure cleaner then didn’t remove the paint, but transferred it….

….auf Simon 😉 😉 😉

….on Simon 😉 😉 😉

Despite a large selection of polishing tools and a highly motivated Simon, the attempts to polish the rims turned out to be rather sobering…

So we then concentrated on removing remaining paint, sealant and filler and preparing the rims for powder coating by sandblasting.

At this point a big thank you to the guys from the powder plant who, after initial great skepticism, managed to get the rims through the plant. The oven is simply not built for these dimensions. 😉

Since the weld seams on the rim are of a very rudimentary nature and tire tubes do not work well with sharp edges, the seams had to be roughened…..

…um dann unter Anwendung unvernünftiger Mengen Sikaflex….

…and then using unreasonable amounts of Sikaflex….

…verschmiert und geglättet zu werden.

…to be smeared and smoothed.

Back to the diff. From our now quite large collection of Magirus Deutz differentials, I chose this 😉

Since a Magirus Deutz differential differs significantly in size and, above all, its weight from a Suzuki Samurai differential and we currently have a team member with back problems, a lifting device had to be built quickly.

Entspanntes Arbeiten 😉

Relaxed working 😉

We didn’t find anything unusual in the axle housing. Chips or the like would only be not so cool at this point 😉

Die alte Übersetzung kommt raus.

The old gearing comes out.

The new one should at least be tested before the final assembly….it’s done quickly…..you think…..

The ring gear didn’t feel like going over the differential body at all….

Also hatte das Teil einen Termin bei „Doktor Hartmetall“.

So the part had an appointment with “Doktor Carbide”.

A few milligrams of steel are no longer part of the party. If only they knew what they were missing. 😉 😉

This meant that the ring gear no longer had any obstacles to assembly and the diff could be put together for a first fit test. Looks really good so far.

Pause.

The main body was cleaned with a high-pressure cleaner and the small parts were given an ultrasound bath.

At this point I would like to pause for a moment and share with you my thoughts that have stuck with me over the last few days.
It’s about axles… about real evil axles for tractor pulling. What else 😉 But what constitutes a real evil axis?

Actually, pretty much 4 things: Firstly, it has to withstand the loads of several thousand horsepower, Secondly, it has to be as light as possible, Thirdly, a wide range of gear ratios should be covered and Fourthly, the installed components should be available in abundance at good prices. Break.

Pause Ende.

Pause zwei.

Break end.
The current „standard“ in pulling is to use a differential whose base comes from a truck and in which some or even all of the other essential components are replaced by lighter aluminum components.
Exactly the same applies to the external planetary gears in the wheel hubs.

In order to get the torque from the chassis and to be able to build the drive shafts light, the speed behind the engine(s) is in many cases significantly increased. Input speeds of around 12,000 rpm at the differential are nothing unusual.
This speed must be reduced by a factor of approximately 30(!) by the differential and the outer planets. There are reductions of approx. 4 to 5.5 on the external planetary gears and 6 to 8 on the differential. That’s crazy! Break two.

Pause zwei Ende.

Break two end.
Now why is this crazy? With large reductions you have to use very large differentials. Large differentials are always heavier than small ones…significantly heavier.

After recently designing some planetary gears and then remembering a conversation with a designer from the Green Monster Team, a thought arose.

Why not make the differential super small and light, leave it with gear ratios of 1 to 3 and use a two-stage outer planet?

Such an external planetary gearbox with two stages should only be a few kilos heavier than a single-stage one. The weight savings for the differential and the resulting smaller axle body are likely to be in the hundredweight range. I think you should take a closer look at the Mercedes Actros 13 ton axles. 😉 😉
I notice that I won’t be able to get rid of these thoughts so quickly.

Aber ich komme vom Thema ab….etwas 😉

But I’m getting off topic…a bit 😉

The other components are now clean and ready for assembly.

Even though the parts are quite heavy, they are assembled quite quickly. In the absence of the standard adjustment tools, I adjusted the backlash by feel. If it doesn’t work, Schlechtenwegen will be our witness 😉

One more word about the gearing. We changed this from 2.06 to 2.71, i.e. almost 32% slower. After consulting with other teams, this is a good reference value for the Puller 2000 tires. We will see.
In that sense: stay tuned!
