Und plötzlich war Kalkar

And suddenly there was the Kalkar pulling event (english below)

That’s not possible… I completely forgot to announce our next event. A week after Sonsbeck we went directly to Kalkar for the Boeren Treck spectacle. There was still some work to be done beforehand.

Since we had two great runs with the little swallowing woodpecker in Sonsbeck, the plug pictures were also really meaningful. And what do we see? Most of the zinc on the ground electrode has turned white or burned away completely. The base ring also has a tendency to change color. If you really wanted to, you could drive a little leaner, but let’s be honest: That wouldn’t produce much more power anyway and why risk the engine? So we leave the fuel where it is.

Ersatz liegt bereit.

The crankcase ventilation hose then received a bit of heat from the exhaust manifold and was then partially converted into a liquid state. Replacement is ready.

The problem should have gone away with a thick-walled silicone hose 😉

So we went to Kalkar on Saturday lunchtime. Since the European Championships also took place in Brande, Denmark that weekend, “only” a cup race was held in Kalkar. Quite irrelevant for us because we are pretty far behind in the German championship 😉 😉

With some Dutch guest starters, Gardenpulling was able to present a very respectable field of starters. Some teams even traveled from Denmark specifically so that they could compete in Kalkar in addition to the European Championships. Respect for so much commitment!

At this point I would like to warmly congratulate all the winners and runners-up at the European Championships. The German garden pulling in particular did extremely well!!!!

We ended up in 3rd place. Since Alex is unfortunately still ill, Marvin Rausch took a seat in the Schluckspecht as a guest pilot. And he did a really good job! The engine also spun at around 8,000 rpm, nearly 500 revolutions per minute higher than in Sonsbeck. We just couldn’t get the power into the ground. It did not work. Once again you can see that tractor pulling not only consists of maximum power, but also a lot of skill during setup. I guess I still have to learn a little here 😉 😉

Cool 😉

After Kalkar we went straight to the usual maintenance work. Drain the oil, empty the fuel system and flush the nozzles with petroleum and test them. We haven’t been able to find any damage so far. Cool 😉

No damage to the small tractor also means: You have some time to get the prototype pistons ready. In the last step, the oil drain holes must be drilled into the piston skirt. An ingenious drilling device is used for this purpose.

Also das Bohren hat sehr gut geklappt….

So the drilling went very well…

I can now proudly announce that nothing stands in the way of producing the “real” pistons. The processing sequence and the devices have proven successful, apart from small changes. Now all that’s left to do is make the piston in the engine work 😉 😉

Am Schluckspechtzeraptor wartet auch noch einige Arbeit. Schnelldiagnose in Sonsbeck: Reverser kaputt. *grml*

There is still some work to be done on the Schluckspechtzeraptor. Quick diagnosis in Sonsbeck: Reverser broken. But when dismantling it, it quickly became apparent that it was hopelessly tense. Even the bracket is completely bent. Since the reverser only clutches the shaft directly in forward gear and therefore only the friction torque has to be supported, we are probably dealing with a consequence of abnormal shaking here again… grml

Die Verzahnung sieht noch richtig gut aus!

The gearing still looks really good!

The magnetic oil drain plug has collected chips again. Since there is still plenty of time until the next event…

Spoileralarm: Alles was richtig Last bekommt sieht richtig gut aus.

…the reverser should be completely disassembled, cleaned and checked for damage. Dismantling reversers has basically become a hobby within a hobby 😉 😉
Spoiler alert: Everything that gets a real load looks really good. The chips come from the unhardened reverse gears. Maybe I should be a little more gentle with them when driving. However, none of this is worrying 😉

This brings us to the last possible cause of the shaking. The tire. If they don’t cause the vibration… well, then I’m at my wits‘ end. The two tractors swapped places.

As already written, the Puller 2000, which are also not really good, should now be put on the rims. So first take all the screws out of the tires…

…and then use brute force (and more or less a lot of sense 😉 ) to separate the tire and rim. The rims should also get a bit of new paint at this time.

To slowly come out of the post: There is nothing so bad that it isn’t good somewhere. In this case, a cutting ring screw connection on the brake calipers had become loose and leaked. Through which? Through vibration, of course 😉 😉

In diesem Sinne: Bleibt dran!

So we’re slowly coming to an end. But not without pointing out the last event of the 2023 season.
We would like to take part in this with the small tractor in the 600kg modified class and with the large tractor in the Limited Modified and Light Modified class. You can get more information by clicking on the picture.
With this in mind: Stay tuned!

Sonsbeck 23, der Kleine hat gewonnen!

Sonsbeck 23, the little one won! (english below)

Hello, friends of pulling sports! What a great and successful weekend that was.

But let’s start slowly. Saturday morning we drove off at the crack of dawn and were lucky that we were able to get onto the site. It had rained quite unexpectedly and extremely heavily a few hours earlier.

For this reason, the event started two hours later than planned. In these two hours, the people from Sonsbeck moved heaven and earth to get the paddock, paths and track in a usable condition. And how that worked! At this point, a huge compliment to the entire Trecker Treck Sonsbeck team, crazy how you managed it!

At least we could unload in peace and prepare for the garden pulling. Since Alex was absent due to illness and both Simon and I weigh too much, we asked Thorsten Schlarbaum if he would like to drive the little Schluckspecht. In our early days he gave us so many valuable tips and helped where he could… But since he was also at the start with his Red Raptor, Andreas Roetter was allowed to drive. He also has a lot of experience with wild turbo tractors 😉

And so what I hadn’t thought possible happened: After a brilliant full pull in the pre-run, we actually won the jump-off before Insanity! The Big Bang! Our big thanks go to Dennis Dülger and Phillip Schilling from Insanity, who quickly lent us a replacement ignition coil before the finale. Very cool action!

But then a little hectic broke out. Actually, a larger farmer class should be driven between the Gardenpulling and the Limited Modified. However, due to the delayed start of the event, it was postponed to the next day.

So before the award ceremony it was time to sprint to the big tractor, refuel, tech and safety check and off to the scales. The class was already running when we were pulled into the prep room. Despite the hustle and bustle, we were able to do a sovereign full pull in the lead. But the fan club that came here especially in the form of my family wouldn’t have let anything else get through 😉 😉

Vielen Dank! Start mit einem Klick aufs Bild.

We were then able to end the final with a super second place. At this point a big congratulations to the still quite new Blackout and his driver/team. You put a mighty diesel pig on the track 😉

We were able to end the very successful day with a few refreshing drinks and a very cool pulling program.

The next day, the Light Modified was still on the program for us. After evaluating the data from Saturday, we didn’t change much at all. Since the class is driven without restrictors, a significantly higher boost pressure should occur by itself.

That’s how it was then, only on the one hand there was no acceptable distance with a little over 60m, on the other hand I had to realize to my disillusionment that the vibration and shaking had become almost even more violent.

Despite a blown charge air hose and a bent dashboard, we went into the second run. The result was pretty much the same.

But enough babble. Mr. Jo has kindly uploaded a detailed summary of our runs for us. Thank you! Start with a click on the picture.

Now a few words from a technical point of view. The conversion measures on the small Schluckspecht have turned out to be a complete success. With 6 bar fuel pressure, the nozzle utilization has reduced from 100% at 3 bar to 75% and is therefore a healthy range.

The new power supply also delivered electricity without a significant drop in voltage.

And as you saw, you saw nothing. The new, again enlarged crankcase ventilation with catch tank seems to work great. However, the hose is not up to the probably quite hot blow-by gases and melted. 😉 We have to go there again.

The axis did a great job. The tractor ran nice and straight and no suspicious noises can be made out.

The ignition system is causing me a bit of concern. In the final, just like in the pre runs, a cylinder dropped out. Pre run cylinder 3, final cylinder 4. I’m afraid that the ignition coils don’t want to join our madness 😉

We shot our reverser (once again) at the big Schluckspecht. The gear doesn’t go in or out. And that we can’t get rid of the vibration is slowly getting on my nerves. We’re going to pull the rip cord now before we damage the tractor even more. The Puller 2000 come on it. Yes, exactly the ones I really didn’t want to tackle anymore. So we have to drive outside of the ranking in the Light Modified, for the Limited Modified it fits in terms of weight. It remains exciting. In other words: stay tuned!

But work comes before fun! In this case, the tank had to be rebuilt under the Mini saddle. Get all the dirt out and see how much diesel fits into this thing.

Zack, mal eben mittel Gravimetrie…..

Bang, just do gravimetry…..

…to find out that 128 liters fit into the tank. I didn’t think it was so much 😉

Der Feuerlöscher…..

The fire extinguisher…..

…has also completed its transformation. I think that’s a really useful thing.

A few coils for the injectors should also be rewound. The aluminum carrier was previously insulated with Kapton tape.

Und nach kurzer Zeit…

After a short period of time…..

….the coils were already finished. To prevent any damage caused by vibrations, the empty spaces were filled with a mass of rubber-like consistency….sealant 😉

Aussagekraft: Genau Null 😉

This is a change of subject… the sparkplugs from Viersen. Everything is there. From totally oily because we had to shut down the cylinder, to fawn brown, which is very strange with methanol, to completely corroded because there was apparently moisture in the combustion chamber. Significance: Exactly zero 😉

In the last post we dealt with pistons. Today we’re going to make piston pins. Strictly speaking, „only“ the transmash bolt is reworked. The part is probably case-hardened, i.e. it has a hard outer layer and a tough core.

Sollte doch mal was einfacher klappen als befürchtet?

To get in, first machined a conical end. All without any major difficulties. Shouldn’t something work out easier than feared?

Also direkt mal übermütig werden….

So get cocky right away…. Can you shorten the pin with the cutting tool?

Nein, kann man nicht 😉 😉

No, you can’t 😉 😉 (Spindle error)

But Stefan doesn’t give up. It may also be necessary to first remove the hard surface layer with another steel.

Nein, auch das geht nicht. Also erstmal ein taktischer Rückzug zum Nachdenken 😉

No, that’s not possible either. So first a tactical retreat to think about 😉

Let’s move on to the piston itself. There is still an allowance on the piston pin bore. The bore has to be drilled extremely precisely in one clamping. In this case with a diamond cutting plate.

With 0.02mm play in the fit, the bolt goes very nice. Normally the bore would have to be honed as well, but we don’t want to overdo it, do we?

In the meantime, the idea of shortening the bolt with the one-handed angle grinder matured. It’s a good thing that it’s a one-hand angle grinder, otherwise I wouldn’t have had a free hand to take this picture 😉

Not shit at all! Smooth it out beforehand and also turn this end conically…

Fertig ist ein echt cooler Kolbenbolzen!

A really cool piston pin is finished!

Oh yeah, almost forgot, the lubricating holes for the piston pin also had to be put in… They are later directly connected to the drain holes of the oil scraper ring and are thus supplied with oil.

Der neue Kolbenbesatz. Zweimal Kompressionsring und ein Ölabstreifer.

The new piston setup. Two compression rings and one oil scraper.

With that we have „already“ arrived at the penultimate processing. The outer contour and the ring grooves must be made.

Auch hier kommt eine Diamantschneide zum Einsatz.

A diamond blade is also used here.

Isn’t it beautiful? I turned a very light groove structure on the shaft to be able to hold the oil better. In the picture it looks way deeper than it actually is.

The oil scraper has already taken place as a test. Looks almost like a modern car piston… just a little bigger 😉

Let’s get to the preparations for Sonsbeck. The test run for the big Schluckspecht was so far totally unspectacular. This time the little one wanted to annoy us…..again. The clutch didn’t open far enough to get the gear in. Crap. So the whole drive shaft and the reverser out, put a total of 4 M10 washers under the hydraulic release cylinder and it worked. Such a superfluous piece of crap…. Well, it works now 😉

Whenever Simon walks through the company with a wooden spring-hinged ruler with metric divisions (vulg. folding rule) one can be curious what he concocts…..

Irgendwie logisch. Hier Simons Lösung für das Problem 😉 😉

Ey….there is the tracked specht in our cabin! Unfortunately, Alex cannot come with us due to illness. Get well soon! And since Simon then has to drive the Crafter, he can hardly drive his camper and take the tracked specht with it at the same time. Kind of logical. Here is Simon’s solution to the problem 😉 😉

Loading in the rain is just so…semi-cool. But folks, the weather forecast for the weekend is looking really good! So off to Sonsbeck!

PS: If you drop by, Simon turned 60 today! Don’t forget to congratulate! 😉

In that sense: See you in Sonsbeck and stay tuned!

Ein paar Schrauben locker…..

A few screws loose…..(english below)

Before we start with fasteners that are no longer quite as tight, here is our next appointment. In less than two weeks we would like to start with both tractors in Sonsbeck. Saturday will start in the 600kg Modified Class and in the 3.5t Limited Modified. We would then like to hook on on Sunday in the Light Modified. This is going to be awesome! And the rest of the program is also extremely cool! You can get information by clicking on the poster.

Well, what can I say… sometimes things happen that are so unbelievably stupid that you shouldn’t even show them… but we do. First of all, the side fenders with all the electronic stuff have to come off.

Ok, one stud is missing completely… but the other one is „pretty“ loose… It wouldn’t be long before the whole engine would have been lying on the track…. 😉 😉
All(!) screw connections were so loose that the engine could lift several centimeters. This also explains the violent twisting of the chassis, which we had never seen before.
Well, that’s why the tooth of the drive shaft is made with so wide clearence 😉 😉

The old bolts were then fed into the material cycle.

With a little „gentle force“ the motor was then brought back into its original position and screwed tightly with proper(!) screws and screw lock. If that doesn’t work I don’t know what will…

That all this shaking is just crap for everything, you can also see from the lead-acid batteries. Despite the tension belts, they got quite a bit of chafing.

But we can deal with that with a thin sheet of steel as armor 😉 But for what actually? With a newly adjusted clutch and a tightly screwed engine, we will probably have the smoothest-running tractor ever 😉 😉

The cable duct has also been given a cover again. I couldn’t resist the „fear cable ties“…

Antriebswelle zur Kontrolle raus….

Drive shaft out to check….

…and jack up the rear axle. And then the big shock. The wheels could only be turned with considerable effort. The differential compensation ran buttery smooth. Only in the same direction of rotation was it almost impossible to turn by hand…. Did we kill our axis after all?

The hastily removed reverser brought relief…..

The one tooth sleeve at the transition to the diff has tarnished violently. It is quite possible that the generously dimensioned clearence in the gear teeth was not enough to compensate for the motor almost falling down 😉 😉
I don’t even want to know what the powertrain did there.

Zugegebenermaßen war 1mm umlaufende Luft auch etwas optimistisch ausgelegt 😉 Also musste ein neuer Flansch her.

Admittedly, 1mm of side clearence was also a bit optimistic 😉 So a new flange was needed.

Fertig

Done

A good opportunity to see what has been collected on the magnetic oil drain plug. Well, it looks wilder than it probably is. Not so easy to see in the picture: It is mainly quite fine abrasion. Do you need to dismantle the gearbox?

I think it’s enough to create space for new chips with a cloth 😉 😉

Auch die Kupplung wurde nachgesehen. Es konnte nichts auffälliges gefunden werden. Man muss auch mal Glück haben.

The clutch was also checked. Nothing conspicuous could be found. Sometimes you have to be lucky.

Since I’m slowly running out of spare coils for the large injectors, I should start winding new ones 😉

The system is not that mature yet. Do you see the small chafing mark on the glass fiber tube? That was enough to keep the valve permanently open. That can sometimes go wrong…..

Speaking of „going wrong“. Where things can go wrong, you should have things with you that can straighten them out. In this case a fire extinguisher. But powder extinguishers are pretty much the stupidest thing you can dump on a burning tractor. We do it differently. So this old fire extinguisher (you should always have plenty of it) had a date with a paint stripper that you certainly can’t buy in the bio market *rofl*

„Die Abbeizer entlackt der Gerät schweißfrei“ 😉

Sorry, joke only working in german language. 😉 For you English speakers: Paint off

The innards have also been reworked strictly according to the fire brigade and pressure equipment guidelines 😉 Let’s continue with this in the next one.

The turbo damage quickly diagnosed in Viersen is probably not one. When cold, the chargers feel good again. Presumably the high proportion of methanol in the oil and the resulting low viscosity also caused the funny clearence when the turbo was warm. After consultation with Thommy Mathmann, the all-clear is given for the time being if the wheels have not rubbed against the housing. The oil can also be pushed back out of the bearings without damage. We will see it in Sonsbeck.

So, from methanol problems to diesel problems. What looks like a giant flypaper here is the main diesel filter from our mini saddle truck. I have no idea how long it was there…but it doesn’t look really good anymore.

Egal, der Tank muss in jedem Fall drunter weg.

It doesn’t matter, the tank has to be dismounted in any case.

Hmm…I expected worse. The diesel still looks pretty good.

Let’s take this opportunity to clean up!

In der Füllstandsanzeige siehts irgendwie verdächtig aus 😉

In the fuel level indicator it looks somehow suspicious 😉

Is this still a habitat or already a biotope?

At the end of this post something completely different. Since Fuchtorf is just around the corner in barely 8 months……

….and I just didn’t feel like screwing the tractor, I thought to myself: Just get on with the piston prototypes again. Sometimes you can’t always just screw, but you have to let chips fly.

What looks like a completely worn-out milling cutter here…is one too. But just super hyper specially ground….

…to make lubrication grooves in the piston pin bore 😉 Don’t worry, it only looks so deep because the bore is still undersize. It’s just the pistons made of the wrong material that I want to test the processing sequence with 😉

Könnte was werden.

I think it doesn’t look all that bad. Could become good. There will probably be another post here before we leave for Sonsbeck.
In that sense, I would say: Stay tuned and we’ll see you on the pulling track of Sonsbeck.

Meine armen Nerven….

My poor nerves… (english below)

I’ll tell you… what an eventful weekend in Viersen… I don’t need that more often in the form, but more on that later. First of all we wanted to let the little Schluckspecht run…just to check….actually…..

Since a (harmless) trigger error appears in the logs from time to time, I wanted to quickly check a few settings. For this reason, the „coil on plug“ ignition became a „coil on cable on plug“ ignition…..

…quite simply to get a tap for the ignition light gun.

Quickly made a mark on TDC. It’s not precise, but we’re not doing science here, we’re doing tractor pulling 😉

Was ein Scheiß. Diverse Einstellungen brachten keinen Erfolg.

And that’s when the theater started… the engine ran like a bag of nuts and the ignition timing (actually fixed at 0°) moved in all directions. What a shit. Various settings were unsuccessful. Of course it then also started to rain like cats and dogs. If shit, then with full power….

Simon and Alex were right again. The ring gear in which the starter engages was not given a feather key by Stefan at the time and has thus happily twisted in all directions as a result of the hits from the starter when cranking. Of course we didn’t get a clean ignition timing that way. I certainly don’t need to mention that the part only went down with the use of brute force. Shit with full power *grml*

Die Passfeder war schnell drin….

The key was done quickly…

…and suddenly we also had an ignition that was exactly at 0°. Nevertheless, the engine ran like crap. Even with the 10° advance that we normally have when idling.
What else had we changed? The fuel pressure was increased from 3 bar to 6 bar. Of course, both the flow rates and the dead times of the nozzles have been adjusted accordingly. The engine’s vital parameters indicated that something else was wrong. Cylinder 6 had no exhaust temperature.
After a short check, it was clear: the ignition coil was broken. That also explains the strange sound of Füchtorf. A cylinder was missing 😉
With a new ignition coil, slight adjustments in the fuel values and a lot more hours of work than expected, everything was then ready for loading for Viersen. The weather forecast was updated almost every hour… it didn’t bode well, but the organizers wanted to go through with it.

Was war passiert?

Last stop….but we are not in Viersen but in Hagen. What happened? After we left early in the morning and were not suspecting anything wrong on the A1 towards Hagen, the Iveco of our mini saddle reported with the warning message „Injection“ and switched off the engine at exactly the same moment. Without warning, in the middle of the freeway. Totally cool! A bit perplexed, I was able to start the engine again, only to come to a standstill again after a short distance. Kindly enough, the distances you could drive became shorter and shorter. It was just about enough for a parking space.

Tja, was tun?

Well, what to do? The suspicion quickly turned to the diesel filter, which fortunately we even had with us from the previous owner. So swap it out and let it idle for a few minutes. We had high hopes that we could continue driving, but were disappointed after a few hundred meters on the freeway. Engine off again. With at least 10 engine starts, we were able to save ourselves a fairly steep exit into an industrial area.

And then Alex had the idea to save the weekend for us. We need an Iveco workshop nearby! And indeed we were able to get the almost 10km behind us under the most adventurous circumstances. Partly idling in first gear at a whopping 9 km/h, partly…well, let’s leave that 😉
I once heard from someone who is said to have pulled a 10 ton mini semi-trailer with a VW Crafter and a car tow rope through the city of Hagen…I just heard that…I have no idea what that has to do with us… ; ) 😉 😉

At this point a huge thank you to IVECO NEUMANN from Hagen. The workshop was actually open on Saturday and the master knew the pitfalls of an Iveco Daily very well. Either the diesel pre-supply pump or the suction filter in the diesel line, which most people are not familiar with.

Exactly this shit thing! So basically quite good…. just somehow we have some crap in the tank that has clogged the filter.

I don’t think any more words are needed. New filter in and on we went…albeit with a few hours delay. We missed the garden pulling and thus the planned use of the little Schluckspecht, but we arrived. This was not to be expected on the morning of the same day.
The terrain was quite soft from the rain, but since all the vehicles were towed to the pitches, that went quite well.

Also genau genommen saß Alex am Steuer.

So we were actually able to make a nice show pull on Saturday evening. Actually, Alex was behind the wheel. And he did it well! Unfortunately, Mr. Jo was only there „privately“ and didn’t film any videos of our runs. Please check that we didn’t film anything ourselves, but after so much crap all day long we just wanted to make a pull and then enjoy a few drinks of refreshing nature 😉 😉
Here is a video snippet shot by Simon and uploaded by our hardcore fan Andy

Sunday morning was even worse weather than forecast for Saturday. So all DTTO classes were pushed forward. It was our turn after a sports class in the Light Modified as the second class of the day. Then a moment of shock during the test run. Not only oil came out of the exhaust from the right bank, but a fountain of unburned methanol. The first injector quickly turned out to be the culprit. The coil had a short circuit to ground and was therefore permanently open. More on that later. The coil was quickly disconnected and we started with an 11-cylinder. 😉
There is a video of the run by Stephan Görtz, pullingpics.de

Was ein turbulentes Wochenende. Meine Nerven brauchen echt mal eine Pause 😉

The pull ends after less than half the distance with very unpleasant noises, the exact origin of which we do not yet know. But more on that later. Shortly after our run, the event was interrupted by prolonged rain and we made our way home. What a turbulent weekend. My nerves really need a break 😉

When we got home, the usual procedure. Drain oil to boil off the methanol. And here the very light color immediately catches the eye. I already said that one nozzle was permanently open and so considerable amounts of methanol not only left the engine in liquid form through the exhaust, but also ended up in the engine oil.
As we had already suspected, after the test run with the broken nozzle, a few liters of fresh oil were poured directly onto the engine. Unfortunately, there was no more time for an oil change.

And so the soup boils very violently with the large amounts of alcohol. The fact that the lubricating effect decreases considerably due to the methanol content certainly does not need to be explained. 😉

Da passt man einmal 5 Minuten nicht auf…… Eimer voll 😉 😉

You don’t pay attention for 5 minutes…… bucket full 😉 😉

The broken injector coil was quickly replaced. I guess I’ll have to wind some spare spools 😉

We were a bit disappointed because none of the measures that had been taken in the meantime could get the heavy vibrations of the rear axle under control. You can see how badly it shakes in the pictures above. The loose part is the cover of a metal(!) cable duct. It simply vibrated loose and went under the sled…..not good!

Even if the little Schluckspecht didn’t drive in Viersen, the methanol from the test runs has to be flushed out of the nozzles. I’ve got a real routine in there now 😉

Let’s draw a current interim balance from a sporting point of view:
The new clutch setting has proven itself extremely well. The clutch is closed during the pull and no longer slips a millimeter
Neither the new clutch setting nor the change in tire pressure have reduced or even completely eliminated the vibrations.
The turbo damage initially feared in Viersen is quite unlikely.
At the start with little grip, the engine revs over 3,000 rpm. As soon as grip is there, the speed drops to 2,200 to 2,500 rpm, i.e. the engine has to work very hard!
We continue to have problems with power outages and broken logs. We only took very incomplete data home from Viersen. That annoys me the most.
At the pull on Sunday I tried to start as gently as possible due to the poor grip at the start and what can I say…that works very, very well with an EFI even with a turbo engine.

Bleibt dran!

The question remains how we proceed to find the cause of all the current problems….. And sometimes coincidence helps. When maneuvering the tractor with the forklift, I thought I couldn’t see properly… The engine is completely loose!!!!! So not just a little, but he can move several centimeters…should that be the cause of all the problems? Did that cause any consequential damage? We will see…..
Stay tuned!

Edewecht 2023, es war der Knaller

Edewecht 2023, it was a hit (english below)

For days there was speculation as to whether Edewecht would take place at all because of the modest weather and then the Red Shadow sled team knocked out such a bang!
After some changes to our tractor (completely new clutch setup, changed power supply, etc.) we were very curious how everything would go. And it went really well! But see for yourself:

Many thanks to Mr. Jo for the cool video!

Macht weiter so! Ganz großes Lob von den Schluckspechten!

But while we’re on the subject of videos, just click on the image above. Sascha Mecking and his team have been streaming events from all over Europe for some time. In the meantime, this has reached a level of professionalism that no longer needs to hide from television formats! Keep it up! Great praise from the Schluckpecht pulling team!

It’s currently going fast. The next event is already coming up. On the 5th and 6th of August we will go to Viersen Dülken for tractor pulling. There we would like to hook on with both the 600kg modified class Schluckspecht and the Light Modified. Show pulls are also planned for Saturday. We keep our fingers crossed that the weather will improve!

But first, let’s jump back in time to the week before Edewecht. During the obligatory test run before an event, two fuel hoses were suddenly leaking. Not at the screw connection, no, the hose itself had apparently become leaky due to the methanol. The NBR steel braided lines were actually advertised as being resistant to methanol. I suppose that did not work. And that although we have always emptied the system during longer downtimes…..grml

Also einmal bitte alles neu in Teflonleitungen machen…..

So once please do everything new in Teflon lines…..

…und direkt auf den Trecker schrauben.

…and screw directly onto the tractor.

Then I completely withheld from you that Alex lovingly took care of the broken fender. After the shaking in Füchtorf he is now fixed.

Freshly cleaned, it then went on its journey to Edewecht.

We then amazingly drove 2m behind the Rocket Science…..
…. just unfortunately not with the tractor 😉 😉 😉

A few quick bits of information about our pull itself: The transport trolley for tools and gas bottles built by Alex and Simon proved to be a huge help! The new clutch setting worked great. Actually even better than expected. The clutch is definitely CLOSING now.
We still have a fairly violent shaking in the rear axle, after evaluating the first pictures, the suspicion is that the tire pressure is too low. We’re going to get to the bottom of that.
Now that the clutch is actually closing, we simply don’t have enough power. As soon as grip is there, the speed drops to around 2,300 rpm. Actually, we would like to rev around 1,000 rpm higher. We still have to fix this.
And the best for last: The tractor has apparently remained intact. 😉

I hope that I will finally be able to shoot and edit the next videos in my currently rather short time. I’m just getting on my nerves that it doesn’t work that way. But there are also more important things in life. 😉
This is how the usual picture emerges after an event. Engine oil down to boil out the methanol…..

In erster Linie unheimlich viel Öl.

…and plugs out to see how the engine ran. And what do we see? First and foremost, an awful lot of oil. As long as the plugs don’t even burn free, we’re still a long way from critical settings.

Die nächsten Zündkerzen die reinkommen….

The next spark plugs that come in….

…get a reduced spark gap of 0.55mm. In addition, I would like to increase the charging times of the coils under load in order to achieve absolutely reliable ignition of the mixture. It is also conceivable that the vibrations come from a rough-running engine or are at least amplified. I’ll probably drain some fuel and turn the ignition timing a little higher. The boost pressure should also be increased moderately. Let’s see if we can’t get the old tires turned properly. 😉

But the new engine for the Le Coiffeur chassis also continues. The connecting rods are dismounted.

And here are two pictures of why you should take apart an engine that is apparently in great condition. What a mud in the crankshaft. Aggelärks!

Die Stehbolzen für die Dieselpumpe müssen weg….

The stud bolts for the diesel pump have to go….

Eigentlich…..

…so that Stefan can start drilling the oil supply for the main bearings straight away. It’s already known from the last engine and isn’t really a big problem anymore. Actually…..

Und schon steckt ein Bohrer im Block. Kacke.

And there’s already a drill in the block. poop. Luckily he decided to break that high….

…that you got it out again with a few worried levers with the pliers. I really don’t need it more often 😉

A problem then arose at the last main bearing. You would drill right through the stud for the clutch bell housing. Hmmmm…I guess I have to come up with something…

Simon has made it his mission not only to build one of the strongest Transmash in Europe, but also one of the most beautiful 😉 😉

Was machen eigentlich unsere „revolutionären“ Einspritzventile?

What do our „revolutionary“ injectors actually do? Of course, the´re running day in and day out at full speed with methanol on the test stand. So far it’s all looking very, very good!

The small tractor is also waiting to be used next weekend. Here, however, we still have to make a few changes to the engine control so that the engine really gets enough fuel. However, since this is „only“ typing on the laptop, it shouldn’t really be a problem.
In that sense I would say: See you in Viersen and stay tuned!

Edewecht 2023 wir kommen!

Edewecht 2023 we´re comming! (english below)

So, the final preparations are complete, the big tractor is running, we’re ready for Edewecht. Since the weather has been more than modest in the last few days, rumors have been circulating that Edewecht has been canceled. The organizer expressly points out that any changes in the program or even a rainout will only be announced on official channels (Website or Facebook).

But there is also good news for those who stayed at home. Edewecht will be streamed live and free of charge by Sascha Mecking and his crew. You can find the streams at
Floating finish
YouTube
or
WWPTV
If the stream breaks off on one channel, just keep looking at one of the other sites mentioned.

In that sense, I would say, see you in Edewecht and bring the weather gods a small gift …. e.g. burn a small bowl of methanol. 😉
If you can’t wait any longer, you can find a video of the final test run on our hardcore fan Andy’s website.

Ne Menge passiert!

A lot happened! (english below)

But first to the next event where we would like hook on: EDEWECHT on July 29th, 2023! We’re already hot as chip fat that it starts. You can get all the information by clicking on the banner or this link.

But now to what happened to us. Post frequency is pretty low here, I’ll admit it. A lot has happened anyway. Let’s start slow.

Sehr geil!

There you are on vacation and Simon and Alex start to work. 😉 Actually, the former chain wheelbarrow should be a shunting vehicle for the big tractor. That was dropped a few months ago when it became clear that putting over 1.5 tons of front axle on this chain behemoth is not a good idea. 😉
So Alex and Simon quickly built a service vehicle to be able to move compressed air, fuel and tools on the pulling grounds. Very cool!

Since our motorbike fanatic Simon has a rack on the camper for his mopeds anyway, our „Serviceschlucki“ is transported with it.

Where the chain tractor was standing there, the idea quickly came up to pull the little Schluckspecht with it to the scale.

Es muss eine Öse dran!

There has to be an tow point on it!

Mein Gefühl sagt mir: Das wird gut! 😉 😉

My feeling tells me: This will be good! 😉 😉

Themenwechsel.

Change of subject. The oil has to come out of the rear axle of the little Schluckspecht….

…because the axle pig doesn’t really sit tightly in the housing. Now and then I just have to bite the bullet „sealant“. 😉 😉

But another construction site also had to be completed. A week after Edewecht, both tractors go to Viersen.

There is a still quite empty but new battery box waiting…..

…and an old, still quite full battery box for wiring.

Natürlich bricht Instantchaos aus 😉

Of course instant chaos breaks out 😉

In the end it looks pretty neat.

Check.

The whole thing is a bit edgy, but again over 3 kilos more at the front and oil should no longer come out of the separator. Check.

The subject of „pistons“ keeps coming up again and again.

The first samples from the „wrong“ aluminum are still good enough to test the intended processing sequence. Somewhere I even learned to put gauge blocks together 😉

Warum neue Kolben?

Why new pistons? Sure, because the old ones are thrown out. Simon heats up the diesel pistons of the „new“ engine with the gas burner that he made himself.

Zack, ausgebaut.

Zack, extracted. At least the compression rings still look so good and little used that we can probably take them over to the new pistons. The piston pins are reworked.

Die Kolben sind raus….

The pistons are out…

…und schon kann die Kurbelwelle ausgebaut werden.

…and the crankshaft can be removed.

Control freak Stefan is immediately on hand to clearly label all parts. 😉

Alles ordentlich verstaut.

Everything neatly stowed away. I can only repeat it again and again: The condition of the engine is really good!

But now to the main story of today’s post. I don’t say the word revolution very often, but what’s coming could start a small revolution in the pullingsport!

You see a Hilborn PG 175 methanol pump on a three-phase asynchronous motor, a trigger wheel on a DC motor and a 60 liter barrel. All of this tinkered together on a one-way pallet.

Jetzt wird das Kunstwerk schlau: Ecumaster EMU PRO 16

Now the work of art is getting clever: Ecumaster EMU PRO 16

Diverse Fittinge, Rohre und ein HANA CNG Ventil…..

Various fittings, pipes and a HANA cng injector…..

…erweitert um einen 12V Bleiakku von der Resterampe.

…extended by a 12V lead-acid battery from the rest ramp.

Sensibly hosed and supplemented by an Aeromotive pressure regulator…

EINSPRITZVENTILTESTSTAND!

….after chaotic cabling and filling with water, it becomes an

INJECTION VALVE TEST STAND!

Laptop and oscilloscope have also arrived. But why is this all so revolutionary now?
Quite simply, if the injection valve should do what its data sheet promises and then be able to be controlled with the EMU PRO 16, it is possible for the first time to operate the largest available engines with an EFI at relatively little financial expense.

As far as I know, this combination is unique in the world.

An example calculation: The EMU PRO 16 costs around 2,200 euros. The can handle up to 12 cylinders fully sequentially. An injector costs around 100 euros. An ignition coil around 90 euros. This means that the essential components for a 12-cylinder engine are available for less than 5,000 euros. Comparable systems used to cost a multiple(!) of this.

The trick is controlling the injectors. These are very low-impedance at 0.9 ohms. A so-called peak and hold control is required. In other words, the valve is pulled open with a fairly high current and kept open with a fairly low current. This isn’t anything particularly new. This is also not something that only the Ecumaster can do. For example, the MAXXecu can do that too. Only up to now, no corresponding valves were available at a reasonable(!) cost.

And that is exactly what is changing with the HANA H2200 valves: At only 3 bar fuel pressure, they have a flow rate of over 10 liters/min with a dead time of just 2ms. That’s crazy.

The peak and hold control is clearly visible on the scope. This is the voltage signal at the valve. I was still too lazy to build a shunt. 😉 😉
The only question left is how the valve behaves with methanol…… Little spoiler: It’s going to be awesome! 😉 😉

Damit zu einem abrupten Themenwechsel. 😉

So for an abrupt change of subject. 😉
It’s still a little over two years until my older daughter is allowed to ride for the first time, but after Füchtorf the motivation was so high that the Schluckpechte have grown. The first meters have already been successfully completed. With two years of practice on the company premises, hopefully the time will fly for you 😉

Richtig. Mit Rohren für den neuen Transmash. Wir haben da so Ideen.
In dem Sinne: Wir sehen uns in Edewecht!

How do I release you now after so much excitement from the post? Correct. With pipes for the new Transmash. We have ideas.
In the sense: See you in Edewecht!

Langsam aber sicher….

Slowly but surely…. (english below)

…. we continue. On the one hand, many things are happening that are just not that exciting and not worth reporting, on the other hand, the nice weather invites you to do something outside and not to rot in the company 😉 But let’s just get started.

Nix CAD.

Inspired by a purchased oil catch tank, Stefan got it in his head and just started tinkering. No CAD.

Well, basically the things are quite simple. The oily air from the crankcase enters at the top right, is deflected downwards, rises and leaves the crankcase through the pipe on the left downwards.

Etwas „Ultra Grobe“ Stahlwolle sollte den Abscheideeffekt noch verbessern.

Some „Ultra Coarse“ steel wool should improve the separating effect.

Since we have a box for the new battery anyway, it makes sense to put the oil catch tank on there as well.

With a bit of paint it should look really chic.

Another topic…..Since we have to deal with power cuts from time to time and we don’t yet have an exact plan where they come from, you just have to do something on suspicion. A possible cause could be „dirt“ in the on-board voltage. In other words, impulses and voltage peaks that don’t belong there. So the idea was born to equip the Ecumaster with filters that keep this supposed dirt away.

So entstehen aus vier Aluklötzen…..

This is how four aluminum blocks are put to the mill…..

…auf der Fräse….

….where they become….

…wunderschöne Halbschalen.

…beautiful half shells.

These brackets are for an unwisely big sized capacitor and line filter. The filter „takes care“ of high-frequency crap in the supply voltage. The capacitor charged via a diode smoothes the voltage. The diode is a „backstop“ for the current. Let’s see if that does anything.

Huiii….

We have another part on the 3D printer. Huiii….

Whoever programmed this thing…he wasn’t a genius in percentage calculations 😉 😉

I don’t think I need to explain what that could be, do I?

This is the prototype for our new intake ducts. Later, of course, made of aluminium…cast of course 😉

Material for the new engine/tractor is slowly but surely being found. We need the round stainless steel chunks for the new turbo cross, for example.

I hope these will be our new injectors. If they work even half as well as the data and my feeling say…..it could trigger a small revolution in the pullingsport!!

But before the revolution comes work.

Everything seems to fit so far. At first I wasn’t a friend of injection nozzles that are supplied with fuel from the side. I think that’s about to change.

Möge der Prototyp gebaut werden.

May the prototype be built.

Da sich Schluckspecht-Pulling auch als Wissensportal begreift…

Since Schluckspecht-Pulling also sees itself as a knowledge portal…

…here’s something from the category: „It can also work easy“. A stainless steel weld often looks pretty fancy when it shimmers in all the colors of the rainbow…but that’s not technically correct. The passivation layer of the chrome-nickel steel is destroyed. Now you can chemically passivate the part with crazy toxic pickling paste, grind the seam or clean it electrolytically. You can get the cleaning and polishing electrolytes in well-stocked hardware stores. Only the „machines“ that are offered are simply outrageously overpriced. There is rarely anything under 800 euros… for a shitty transformer. There is another way. You get a carbon brush and an old charger or just a car battery. Minus on the brush, plus on the piece and off you go.

After a short time with around 20A, the tempering colors are gone.

You could even polish with a different electrolyte…but we don’t want to overdo it 😉

That would be the prototype with which I would like to put the nozzle through its paces.

I had to do a first test directly with a highly professional test setup *rofl*. And it works. The nozzle also opens with 12V (operating voltage is given as 24V) and against 8 bar pressure without any problems. The next experiments are undertaken directly with methanol.

Finally, I have something from the high-tech world. Amazing results can be achieved with modern 3D scanners. In this case the front flange should be scanned by the Wola-Transmash.

In diesem Sinne: Bleibt dran!

After a few minutes(!) the things were in the computer. Cool. Since the newer scanners directly record the texture, i.e. the color, it seems as if the part had been sucked into the computer…wrong.

With this in mind: Stay tuned!
